I spent a good number of years as a newspaper paginator/designer — e.g., the guy who actually designs and builds the pages people look at (or, more often these days, glance at) in the newspaper each day. It’s an in-depth job that requires a good eye for headlines, graphics, arrangement and use of color, as well as good old-fashioned news judgment. You can develop a certain flair for it; I wouldn’t call the person who does it an artist, but certainly a craftsman. Here’s a few of my personal highlights through the years.
